Funding Opportunites

Laboratory visits

Laboratory Visit Coordinator: Guido Bugmann, University of Plymouth
Biro-net has funds available to support visits between labs in the UK and aborad.

Laboratory visits are a great opportunity for reinforcing the activity in Biologically Inspired Robotics, increasing the awareness if Biologically Inspired Techniques, Community building, horizon widening, gaining practical experience of new techniques, different work practices, research management and space utilisation, small-scale exploratory experiments, in-depth discussions for concepts dissemination, and others.

Format: Typically 24h+ individual stays initiated by the visitor or the host, group visits to an open-day organised by a host, can be linked to other events such as workshops or seminars. Essentially the format reflects the needs.

Support: There is a total budget of £1000 per year, and the budget per visit should not exceed £200. This figure will be revised depending on the number of requests. Applicants are encouraged to use creative accounting. For instance, host institutions could give travel support in the form of expenses for a seminar speaker, e.g. to allow to increase the duration of the stay, or support more visitors, or simply save some money for other visits.

Procedure:
  1. Establish contact with a host (e.g. using the BIRO-net database)
  2. Send your application (1 page max)to biro-admin@aber.ac.uk with a brief description of the purpose of the visit produced jointly by the host and the visitor(s), and a budget.
  3. BIRO-net will then approve the request and specify the maximum amount.
  4. Costs will be reimbursed upon presentation of receipts up to the agreed amount.

Requirements:
  • Host and visitors to be member of BIRO-net, one of them UK-based.
  • Not more than one grant per year per participant.
  • After the visit, a brief report on the benefits of the visits to be produced jointly by visitor(s) and host, in less than a A4 page, within 2 months (to be included in the EPSRC final report).

BIRO-net symposia attendance

A small number of bursaries are available for young researchers attending BIRO-net symposia. Each bursary is worth approximately £100 towards transport and accommodation.

Details of how to apply for bursaries will be posted on the symposia websites.
